Milwaukee Magazine builds its Top Doctors list from a peer survey conducted by Professional Research Services, a research company based in Troy, Michigan. The survey covers professionals in Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, Washington and Racine counties.
After nominations come in, professionals may be screened through license verification and a review of any infractions reported to boards, agencies and rating services. The magazine sums up the idea behind the list in a simple phrase: great doctors know great doctors.

The Training and Experience Behind It
Dr. Joe Aussem earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder and his Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
His clinical background includes several years in private practice and more than a decade with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Over the course of his career, he has built extensive experience in:

- Aural (hearing) rehabilitation
