How North Shore Hearing stands apart
North Shore Hearing offers doctor-led audiology in Milwaukee with best-practice fittings, Real Ear Measurement, and unhurried, one-on-one appointments.
Hear what a well-fit hearing aid sounds like.
Put on headphones and press play. Slide the control and hear the same restaurant conversation come into focus. What we do in the office is calibrated specifically to your hearing, measured and verified with Real Ear Measurement.
Real Ear Measurement tells us what the hearing aid is delivering in your ear canal, not just what it is designed to deliver on paper. Every fitting at North Shore Hearing is verified this way.

Dr. Joseph Aussem, Au.D.
Dr. Aussem grew up in Milwaukee and earned his Doctor of Audiology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Before opening North Shore Hearing in 2025, he spent more than a decade as an audiologist with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He opened an independent practice to give patients more time and more direct care than a larger clinic setting allows.
He opened an independent practice to give patients more time and more direct care than a larger clinic setting allows. Appointments are with him, visits are thorough, and the recommendation you get reflects your hearing, your lifestyle, and your budget. He fits and services all six major brands (Phonak, Oticon, ReSound, Signia, Starkey and Widex), with bundled and unbundled pricing.

Do I need a referral to make an appointment?
No referral needed. You can call or message the office directly to schedule a hearing evaluation or any other service. Most appointments are available within a short wait.
What happens at a hearing evaluation?
Dr. Aussem runs a full diagnostic evaluation of your hearing and walks you through the results in plain language. If hearing aids look like a good option, he explains what to expect and what’s involved before any decisions are made.
What is Real Ear Measurement?
A verification step that measures how a hearing aid performs in your actual ear canal. It tells us the hearing aid is programmed accurately for your specific ears rather than based on a computer estimate. We use it on every fitting.
Do you offer in-home or mobile care?
Yes. Dr. Aussem sees patients at home and provides hearing clinics at senior-living communities across Milwaukee’s north shore. If getting to the office is difficult, reach out and we’ll work out the right option.
